First Matte painting I've ever properly done, don't judge me to harshly because it is my first one, however really enjoyed doing it and I'm always open for critiques. May work on it a bit more but I have to get on with commission work. Enjoy!
It's pretty awesome! The lighting could be more consistent though, the background mountains have clear sunlight cast upon them but the foreground not so much. I think it would look really good if the cliff to the right would be shadowed by the cliffs to the left and have a clear area of sunlight drawn, that's pretty difficult to accomplish though. It's still great, love the composition!
Thanks I'm glad you like the overall idea, and yea I haven't been to sure about the whole right hand side actually was thinking about reworking that whole area, helps when I get critiques like this, sometimes you just can't see what's wrong with a piece you know what I mean
HAH! Totally love this. What inspired this piece for you? It's absolutely gorgeous in detail. I can't help but chuckle, because it is a spherical object of strange origin and unimaginable power/energy. It makes me think of a specimen from the scp site. It is described as a sphere with intelligence and a god-complex. It probably has no relation to this picture, but this is what it reminds me of. It is a beautiful work of art though, even if it isn't a reference to a meme.
Haha thank you I'm glad you like it, a lot of people have actually been saying it's been reminding them of certain things especially references to Halo but it honestly wasn't really inspired by anything, just based it off a sketch I did a few months ago that I decided was good enough to take further.
This is a great job man, I really like the contrast of the two mountain sides with one snowy and one still looking green with I assume like everyone else that is a planet or meteor crashing down into the ground. The only thing my eye catches is the mountain on the right look more 3D to anyone else? Overall though sick concept!
I find this really cool! I have seen many matte paintings and have done hundreds of them myself, I love that you don't over do the atmospheric effects, colors are great, continuity is spot on and the composition is subtle yet dynamic at the same time. The one thing that throws off the eye just a little is the mid-ground mountain on the right should look more like the one on the left. The texture is not even close to what the rest of the environment is like and there is no snow when everything else has snow on it. Also if the mountain is at the same distance as the one on the left it should have the same contrast in light. Other than that, awesome!
Thanks that was an awesome critique, a lot of people have been mentioning the right hand side not fitting in as much as the rest and I didn't even notice until people started pointing it out, definitely going to be reworking that area to bring the rest of the image together. Thanks for your input!
