Description

Matte Painting based off a speed painting I did a few days ago, still a work in progress, would be cool to get some critiques.

Alright, firstly, the immensity of the landscape is incredible. My eye is first drawn to the horizon and conveys the previously mentioned scale, and then slowly drifts up to the enormous planet hovering above the clouds.

Two things come to mind immediately, however: The rock you added, and the mountain/tiny jungle on the sides.

Firstly, the floating rock doesn't seem to fit, and is difficult for me to put into scale. A very good example of what IS put into scale nicely, is the mountain in the very far back, and the smaller planet hovering in the middle right. Not only does it seem out of place, but enforces a point I'm going to make about the jungle/mountain.

Symmetry. The forest/mountain, and the floating rock/mini planet are both creating a symmetrical feeling. Granted, the mountain is pushed further back, and the stone is large/closer, It still seems a bit too uniform to me.

Upon imagining things being taken away, I'd say the right side of the image is brilliant, while the left side simply seems a bit too crowded. The rock and forest are both heavily textured, and perhaps attract the wrong kind of attention.

Perhaps split the rock into smaller chunks, and move them further back so that the viewer can scale them, and make the trees in the forest shorter as to not level out with the mountain as much.

All that said, I think this image is bloody stunning. I was tempted to write a review in the comments, but decided to do one for real...I hope I haven't over-stepped on things I am not knowledgeable about. <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt="=)" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="390" title="=) (Smile)"/>
